Fairgoers encouraged to use public transportation
With the N.C. State Fair kicking off Thursday, event organizers are encouraging fairgoers to use one of several alternative transportation options to help ease traffic congestion and parking problems near the fairgrounds.
Posted — UpdatedPeople in the Triangle can take buses from Raleigh, Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill while fairgoers west of the area can take advantage of Amtrak Carolinian train service.
Riders are dropped off and picked up just outside the fair gates, saving time and gas.
“Taking a park-and-ride bus to the fair is a convenient way for fairgoers to avoid waiting in traffic and searching for a parking spot,” state fair manager Wesley Wyatt said in a statement. “With specifically designed lanes in high-traffic zones, buses have a direct route to the fair, providing quick and easy access to riders.”
Bus services from Raleigh, Cary and Durham will begin Thursday afternoon and run every day of the fair while park-and-rides from Chapel Hill and Garner will be operated on the weekends.
The Amtrak train service begins Friday, Oct. 14 and runs through the final day of the fair on Oct. 23.
Train 80 will depart from Charlotte at 7 a.m. every day, arriving in Raleigh at 10:08 a.m. after making stops in Kannapolis, Salisbury, High Point, Greensboro, Burlington, Durham and Cary. It will depart from the fairgrounds daily at 4:56 p.m.
Fairgoers who plan to drive to the fairgrounds are encouraged to use Wade Avenue and take Edwards Mill Road and park in the free parking lots at Carter-Finley Stadium and the RBC Center.
Parking is free in state-owned lots. Handicap parking is available near Gate 10 in the northeast corner of the fairgrounds, between Trinity Road and Blue Ridge Road.
