Fair vendors donate proceeds to hurricane relief

For some vendors, this annual fall classic is taking on a deeper purpose this year. They’re helping those directly impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael by donating proceeds from their profits to storm relief.

At the Cary United Methodist Church booth, all tips and a portion of the proceeds will benefit hurricane storm victims across North Carolina.

“We are practicing what we preach,” said Kelley Davis. “We are sharing the heart of Christ from the heart of Cary and beyond.”

Across the Midway at Ragin Cajun, home of the new chocolate chip hush puppies, Chris Wrenn said he wants to help people steady themselves.

“When folks go through stuff like that, it knocks them off their feet,” he said.

Chris Wrenn has already donated his time, money and efforts to helping hurricane victims. Two weeks before he turned his attention to the State Fair, Wrenn and several Fuquay-Varina businesses raised thousands of dollars for Hurricane Florence victims.

“Seeing those folks out here walking around, you wonder, who’s had damage, who’s staying in a hotel, who’s staying with family,” he said.

As Friday was the first day of the State Fair, it couldn't have come at a better time for some people still dealing with what Tropical Storm Michael left behind.

Tammie Kenion said the fair “gives me some lights because I don’t have any at home, and I can relax and enjoy the fair.”
