Fair Destination: Trains, pumpkin carving, giant barrel monster

Usually I feature a place to take kids in this space every Friday. But I know that most families are probably busy with plans to visit the N.C. State Fair this weekend or celebrate Halloween a little early, so I'm diverting from the usual schedule today.

Usually I feature a place to take kids in this space every Friday. But I know that most families are probably busy with plans to visit the N.C. State Fair this weekend or celebrate Halloween a little early, so I'm diverting from the usual schedule today.

I will point you in the direction of a post that I wrote earlier this week featuring the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's tent at the fair. It's a fun, free spot with lots of activities to keep kids busy.

And, while I was over at the fair earlier this week, I walked through the Flower & Garden Show, which offers another great place for families to visit. The show features meandering walkways through some beautiful gardens that are tended by local groups. There are plenty of photo opportunities here, including a giant barrel monster and a big Adirondack chair.

I enjoyed the pumpkin carving demonstration. And there's even a model railroad, courtesy of New Hope Valley Railway, where kids can follow model trains as they move along a track. Check out the pictures in this image gallery to see more. And click here to see the full schedule of events at the show. It's a welcome quiet spot at the fair.

Have a wonderful weekend!
