RALEIGH, N.C. — The FAA is putting out a warning after a number of laser strikes on planes across the country.

In 2017, the FAA received 6,754 reports of laser strikes on aircraft. That’s a 250% increase since the FAA started tracking laser strikes back in 2010.

According to reports we uncovered Tuesday, there have been dozens of reported cases in just the past within the past six months in North Carolina and at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

"You blind a pilot and there’s a chance it could crash," said Robbie Jones, who is a pilot for Sky 5.

Shining laser lights into a cockpit is a crime punishable with a fine and up to $250,000 if caught and convicted.
