BURLINGTON, N.C. — 2022 waltzed in without skipping a beat and with it, adventures eager to become reality.

Although my family is taking a slower approach to getting things started, we aren't sitting idly. Explorations near and far are on our minds. One idea we're considering is learning more about the history of the county we live in.

How did the cities and towns originate? Who were the people who first settled here? We've read a lot about the significance of the textile industry in Alamance County. Still, there are many more questions to answer.

Quite a few history museums are in the area and we'd like to visit as many as possible. I've listed some below:

  • Alamance County Historical Museum- Located at 4777 South, NC-62, Burlington, NC 27215
  • Textile Heritage Museum - Located at 2406 Glencoe St, Burlington, NC 27217
  • Mebane Historical Museum - Located at 209 W Jackson St, Mebane, NC 27302
  • Graham Historical Museum - Located at 135 W Elm St, Graham, NC 27253
  • Haw River Historical Museum - Located at 201 E Main St, Haw River, NC 27258

I was always intrigued when learning about history during my school years. However, I don't recall thinking much about where I lived. And although I didn't grow up in Alamance County, my children are. That definitely makes it worth researching.

In addition to museums, we're also interested in the historic sites, farms, memorials, etc, that we've read about. We learned of walking history tours as well. There's much to see and learn for sure.

As we plan our explorations, we'll add to the fun by dining locally. Perhaps we'll find a restaurant that ties in with the county's history. Or, we'll pick up something at one of our favorites to continue supporting local businesses.

If weather permits, however, we're more likely to pack food from home and eat outside. One of our favorite things to do is sit by the Haw River. With so many access points throughout the county, I'm sure we won't have a problem finding good spots.

Alamance County won't be the only area we tour. We have plans to visit quite a few places over the coming months. New-to-us activities are high on our list this year!

As we adventure, we'll share our experiences & corresponding content with you. Of course, you'll find some of those articles right here on WRAL. Others will be posted on my blog, Thriller Mom.

Make sure you're following along.

Do you know much about the history of the place in which you live? If so, is there an aspect you find especially significant? I'd love to hear about it.
