WEBER. >> AT MORNING. ACTUALLY I HAVE MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF INFECTION PREVENTION, BUT I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS TODAY. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. WE WILL MAKE SURE WE GET THAT FIXED. I KNOW WE CAN GET STRAIGHT TO THIS QUESTION, LET'S BEGIN WITH WHERE WE ARE WITH CORONAVIRUS CASES IN NORTH CAROLINA. I KNOW UNC HAS ITS OWN MODELS, HAVE WE REACHED THE PEAK YET? >> SO THE ANSWER IS NO. AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE ABOUT 5600 CASES IN NORTH CAROLINA. APPROXIMATELY 150 DEATHS, AND AS OF YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, ROUGHLY 450 PEOPLE HOSPITALIZED. I THINK BECAUSE WE BEGAN PHYSICAL DISTANCING, WHICH IS THE TERM WE PREFER TO SOCIAL DISTANCING, WE WANT PEOPLE TO STAY CONNECTED, BUT WE WANT THEM TO STAY AT LEAST SIX FEET APART. ACTUALLY, THE MODELS ARE SHOWING THAT THE RATE OF INCREASE IS DROPPING OFF, SO THAT IS GOOD. WE WON'T OVERWHELM OUR HOSPITALS, I THINK. BUT WE ARE STILL ON THE UPSWING, THAT IS THE BAD NEWS. >> DO WE HAVE THE TIME RIGHT NOW YOU MIKE I KNOW THE MODELS KEEP CHANGING OF WHEN WE WILL REACH THE PEAK AT THIS POINT. >> THAT'S A LITTLE HARD, IT SORT OF LIKE HURRICANE MODELS, WHEN THE HURRICANE IS ONLY 12 HOURS OFFSHORE, YOU CAN GET VERY PRECISE ESTIMATES. WHERE WILL HIT AND WHEN IT IS FIVE DAYS OUT IN THE ATLANTIC, YOU KNOW, THE ESTIMATE CAN BE FROM MIAMI TO NORTH CAROLINA. IT IS THE SAME THING HERE. CLEARLY WE WILL SEE INCREASING NUMBERS OF CASES IN THE NEXT 2 TO 4 WEEKS, AND INCREASING NUMBERS IN HOSPITALS. I DON'T THINK WE WILL END UP LIKE NEW YORK, EXCEEDING OUR CAPACITY OF OUR HOSPITALS TO CARE FOR PEOPLE. BUT, WE WILL HAVE CASES, I THINK, GOING ON THROUGH MAY AND INTO JUNE. IT'S HARD FOR ME TO GIVE YOU AN EXACT TIME WHEN WE WILL ACTUALLY PEEK. >> LET'S TALK ABOUT ANTIBODY TESTING, WE'VE BEEN HEARING A LOT ABOUT ANTIBODY TESTING I'M A SCIENTIST THING THAT IS WHAT WE NEED BEFORE WE CAN GET BACK TO NORMAL. WAS SPECIFICALLY WITH THOSE RESULTS TELL US? >> SO RIGHT NOW, THE TESTING LARGELY IS LOOKING DIRECTLY FOR THE VIRUS. SO WE TEXT TEST PEOPLE WHO COME IN WITH SYMPTOMS, AND WE HAVE TESTED SEVERAL THOUSAND HERE AND ABOUT ROUGHLY 7% OR SO ARE POSITIVE. SO EVEN WITH SYMPTOMS, MOST PEOPLE DID NOT HAVE COVID-19. BUT WHAT ANTIBODIES TEST DUE, WHEN WE FIGHT INFECTION, WE DEVELOP ANTIBODIES AND WE CAN TEST THOSE ANTIBODIES. THIS, AS WELL AS THE EPIDEMIC, PANDEMIC, PROGRESSES VERY USEFUL. FIRST ALL, WE CAN DO STUDIES OF THE GENERAL POPULATION AND FIND OUT TRULY HOW MANY PEOPLE BECAME INFECTED, BECAUSE IF THEY HAD NO SYMPTOMS, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TESTED LARGELY. AND IF IT TURNS OUT, MANY AMERICANS BECOME INFECTED, THAT MEANS IN THE FUTURE, IF WE DO SEE THIS RECUR, WHICH I THINK WE WILL NEXT FLU SEASON, WE WILL HAVE A SMALL PEAK OF MANY PEOPLE BECOMING INFECTED. IF ONLY A FEW PEOPLE BECOME INFECTED, WE MAY HAVE ANOTHER LARGE PEEK. THE OTHER THING OF COURSE, YOU'RE GOING TO ASK ME IS, IF YOU HAVE ANTIBODIES, DOES THAT MEAN THAT YOU ARE PROTECTED AGAINST TEACHER INFECTIONS? WELL, CERTAINLY HAVING ANTIBODIES IS GOOD. WE DON'T HAVE A CORRELATION YET BETWEEN HOW MUCH ANTIBODY YOU NEED AND THE RISK OF INFECTION. I BELIEVE, LIKELY, AT LEAST IN THE SHORT TERM MEANING SIX MONTHS TO A YEAR, IF YOU HAVE HAD COVID, YOUR RISK OF GETTING ANOTHER COVID INFECTION WILL BE GREATLY DIMINISHED. AND IF YOU DO GET IT, YOU PROBABLY WILL HAVE MUCH LESS SYMPTOMS AND MUCH LESS CHANCE OF A BAD OUTCOME. BUT THAT HAS YET TO BE PROVEN. >> DR. WEBER, WE HAVE 20 SECONDS . I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilma in the WRL severe weather center, we had a dry warm day today, but a cold front is off to the west of us and it arrives tomorrow and brings the potential for some scattered showers and some thunderstorms. It's a pretty potent system today with a level three out of five risk for part of the Midwest. But the severe weather will be moving eastward as this cold front moves eastward as well. And we'll have the risk for severe storms tomorrow. Although the storm energy will not be as high tomorrow as it is today. There's a lot of storm energy west of us today and that's why they have that higher risk for severe storms. But as this system moves closer to North Carolina, it does weaken. We could still have some isolated severe storms but we have weak to moderate energy. We don't have the strong energy that they have west of us today. So it's a level one risk for most of us Friday. This is in the afternoon and evening. So isolated severe storms possible. The biggest threat will be some damaging winds and a potential for some hail as Well, the first half of the day is dry, so no rain worries for the morning commute. But by the time we get to the afternoon and evening, that's when we'll have scattered showers and storms and any of the storms that do form could become severe. And our highest rain chances are right during the evening commute. So about a 40% chance for rain tomorrow as we move ahead to Saturday, only a slim chance for a shower, a 20% chance for rain. But then a decent chance for rain on Sunday, we don't expect storms, but mainly the second half of our Sunday will have some scattered showers and it will be a cooler day. Here's a look at the rain over the weekend again, just a slim chance for rain on Saturday. Otherwise partly to mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low to mid seventies. Sunday morning looks mainly dry with a little bit of rain over some of our southern counties. But then as we head toward the afternoon, a better chance for rain, especially south and east of the triangle. And then during the evening is when some of that rain lifts to the north and includes a good part of the viewing area on Sunday. So the second half of the day certainly looks like the wettest part of the day, still warm Friday with a high of 84. And then we're down into the mid seventies Saturday, high temperatures will be in the low to mid sixties for Sunday and Monday with some chilly mornings, Monday morning and Tuesday morning. Down into the forties, we warm back up next week though. 74 on Tuesday, 78 Wednesday and near 70 for a high temperature on Thursday.
