DURHAM, N.C. — The former band director at Southern High School was placed on probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to having sex with two students.

Jamal Butler, 31, of Calibre Park Drive in Durham, pleaded guilty to two counts of a sex act with a student by a teacher and was placed on probation for three years.

Butler was charged in February 2009 after an investigation by police and Durham Public Schools revealed that he had relationships with two girls at the school, both of whom were 16 or older at the time, between July 2008 and January 2009.

Butler resigned his position at Southern High about a week before his arrest.
