Event planned to support struggling Carrboro consignment shop

Construction along Weaver Street has hurt the small business of five years. It is "perilously close to going down in flames," Langley Thomson, friend of Red Hen's owner DeeDee Lavinder, tells me in an email.

The store offers consignment clothes and gear for kids, plus a good selection of maternity clothes. You'll find specialty maternity and baby items here as well, including a variety of baby carriers. I always try to visit when I'm in Carrboro myself.

But it also is a meeting place for local mothers groups, including breastfeeding and baby wearing support groups, and a fun place to bring the kids.

"The store is a vital part of the parenting community, and is a beloved favorite among us all," Thomson tells me.

Thomson, along with other Red Hen fans, are hosting an event from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sept. 11, at the store at 201 Weaver St., to raise awareness of its place in the community and to encourage people to come out and shop. Local singer Jimmy Magoo will play. There will be arts and crafts for kids, face painting, food and more.
