Anoop gets hometown celebration

"American Idol" finalist Anoop Desai met with fans in his hometown of Chapel Hill Sunday and will receive the key to the city Monday.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — "American Idol" finalist Anoop Desai met with fans in his hometown of Chapel Hill Sunday and will receive the key to the city Monday.

The Chapel Hill-Orange County Visitors Bureau says that Desai met fans from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Franklin Hotel, 341 W. Franklin St.

The town and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill have declared Monday "Anoop Day" in honor of the former UNC graduate student.

Desai's friends, family and school officials will speak at a public reception at the Carolina Club on campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m. After that Desai will go to Town Hall, where he will receive the key to the city.

The 22-year-old Desai was voted off "American Idol" April 22. He had gotten mixed reviews for his rendition of Donna Summer's "Dim All the Lights" during the show's "Disco Week."

Desai recently said that he plans to pursue a career in music and forgo returning to college to finish his degree.
