Raleigh, N.C. — Maw Hutto, 63, a biscuit baker at the State Fair, said she learned how to cook from her grandmother around a campfire in south Alabama.
“When people taste it, you see their face get happy – the eyes get happy,” Hutto said.
It’s Hutto’s third year at the fair.
“You pet a biscuit, you make it all hard and crusty. You pet a man, he gets all crusty too,” Hutto said.
Hutto even has a country cookbook: Fryin' Pies and Tellin' Lies. She describes her cooking style as “by the seat of your pants.”
“I don’t measure, I eyeball it. If you’d eyeball some situations in life and pay attention, maybe we wouldn’t get in so many messes,” she said.
Hutton’s been married for 30 years. She has one child and five “granddogs.”
