What's so great about a depression?!

Well, the phrase "another Great Depression" is getting kicked around quite a bit these days, and many reputable economists say at least a very deep recession could happen in a worst-case scenario.
To get you in the mood for a happy weekend, here's a look at one of the ways they handled the Great Depression -- local currencies. We had a lack of physical currency, so people devised local scrip to continue trading. You'll find some examples from North Carolina in the list.
Meanwhile, while everyone debates the merits of the $700 billion bailout/rescue plan, check out this slideshow of what else $700 billion will buy. Of course, proponents of the bailout/rescue plan would say $700 billion might also buy a sovlent economy.
