The Exploding Whale

Posted June 8, 2007 8:41 a.m. EDT

One of our viewers, Mike Guay, of Apex, sent me an e-mail yesterday about a video he'd seen on YouTube.  I'd seen it before, but had forgotten it.  There's a good chance you've seen it, too.  The BBC says it's one of the most popular videos in Web history.

In November 1970, a sperm whale beached itself and died in Florence, Oregon.  The state transportation department decided to use a half-ton of dynamite to get rid of the rotting 8-ton carcass.

The results were -- unexpected.  KATU-TV in Portland captured it all on film (they weren't using videotape back then), and I thank them for permission to show the video on the air this morning.

Watch and enjoy.
