DURHAM, N.C. — One Dollar Tree employee shot another before the store opened Monday morning in northeast Durham, police said.

Byron Gainey, 35, was killed and Saquan Evans was charged with murder and taken to the Durham County Jail. Both Gainey and Evans worked at the store at a shopping center near the intersection of Glenn School Road and Geer Street and are Durham residents.

Police said the shooting occurred inside the store. The two men were arguing when Evans shot Gainey, according to police.

Frank Stewart says he has never seen any sort of conflict between employees at Dollar Tree. Stewart said he comes to the store most days to get food on his break from work.

“Everybody seemed real friendly to me," Stewart said. "They always talked with me and they talk with each other, no fussing. Always laughing and joking.”

Stewart said the news is shocking but he plans to return Tuesday, just like he does every day.

“I’m coming back anyway, regardless,” Stewart said.

On Tuesday, Evans applied for court-appointed attorney. His next court date is April 25 and he was deemed "not a threat to flee." Evans had a limited criminal history.

On Tuesday, Gainey's wife and his 6-moth-old daughter were grieving, sharing with WRAL News that they're stunned he's no longer with them.

"He is one of the most down to earth people," said Tolulope Orenuga, the wife of Gainey. "He loved kids. He cares. He loved people."

Orenuga said Gainey started at Dollar Tree in December and was promoted to manager quickly. She said she won't be at peace until she finds out what happened.

"They got in an argument," she said. "Before Byron could do anything, he pulled out a gun and shot him. That's all I know."

An investigation is ongoing.
