DURHAM, N.C. — A 79-year-old Durham woman was injured when a train struck her sport-utility vehicle at a crossing along Mt. Hermon Church Road in Orange County around noon Saturday, state troopers said.

Orange County Emergency Medical Services officials said Ida Clayton, 79, had to be extricated from her SUV. Clayton had broken ribs and was taken to Duke University Medical Center. She was listed in fair condition Sunday afternoon.

Troopers said that Clayton was going north along Mt. Hermon Church Road and started to cross the train tracks near Old N.C. Highway 10. The crossing gate started to lower for an oncoming freight train, trapping Clayton's SUV before eastbound train hit it.

The SUV was totaled, but no one else was injured in the wreck.

Troopers said they continued to investigate and had not filed any charges Sunday afternoon.
