Elderly woman hit, killed in Lillington crosswalk by logging truck

A 74-year-old woman was hit and killed by a logging truck in Lillington around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday while she was in a crosswalk, police said.

LILLINGTON, N.C. — An elderly woman visiting from Florida was hit and killed by a logging truck in Lillington around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday while she was in a crosswalk, authorities said said.

Joyce Corso, 74, Ocala, was killed when a truck turning from Front Street onto Main Street struck and killed the woman, said police Chief Frank Powers. Authorities said she was in Lillington to visit her granddaughter for Thanksgiving.

Authorities identified the truck driver as Elias Gonzalez Jr., of Clinton. He has been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Police said Gonzalez was driving for for El Mexicano Trucking of Warsaw and authorities believe Gonzalez was the owner.
