WENDELL, N.C. — An eighth-grade Wendell Middle School student died Tuesday morning, according to a letter sent to parents by Principal Catherine Trudell.

“It is an unexpected loss, and we are saddened by it,” Trudell wrote.

On Wednesday, Trudell said the school would provide counseling, a student services team and support from the District Crisis Team for students. The school will also provide Spanish-speaking support personnel to assist students as needed, Trudell said.

On Tuesday morning, a "medical crisis" on the campus of the middle school prompted an early dismissal for students, according to a separate letter sent to parents.

"Students are safe," the letter reads. "We will be dismissing at 10:45 a.m. today, Sept. 6, due to a medical crisis on campus.

"School buses will provide transportation home for students who ride by bus, and parents will be able to pick up their students for rides out as usual. School staff will stay with students at school until arrangements have been made for everyone to get home safely."

Wendell Middle School's after-school activities are canceled Tuesday.
