NEW BERN, N.C. — Investigators now believe the enormous wildfire burning in Eastern North Carolina was "human-caused."
The Great Lakes fire in the Croatan National Forest continues to burn across 32,400 acres.

As of Tuesday, the wildfire is 63% contained.

Crews in New Bern have been battling the wildfire since last Friday, according to a social media post from the U.S. Forest Service.

Fire crews set up firebreaks to prevent the fire from spreading to private land and are flying drones around the area to find hot spots that firefighters can put out.

Officials said in a statement Sunday, "Firefighters are starting a sandbag operation to reinforce the water control structure flooding organic soils in the southern end of the fire. Although we have seen consistent rain over the last few days, it is not enough to saturate the soil and put out the fire. This flooding operation is critical to raising the water table and putting out the fire."

Residents shared photos depicting eerie orange skies and thick smoke billowing over suburban neighborhoods.
