With classrooms full and a school year like no other, we decided to talk with some of the most impactful people when it comes to student learning outcomes: Our teachers. Today, we are kicking off a two week series with the North Carolina Regional Teachers of the Year. Our guests: Susanna Cerrato, from Asheville City Schools, Nicole Rivers, with Cumberland County Schools and Jennifer Bryan, with Brunswick County Schools. 

Welcome to Education matters presented by the public school forum of north Carolina. I'm your host Maryanne Wolf with classrooms full and the school year. Like no other, we decided to talk with some of the most impactful people when it comes to student learning outcomes are teachers today? We are kicking off a two week series with the north Carolina Regional Teachers of the Year. I'd like to welcome to the show three regional teachers of the year Susanna cerrado from Asheville City Schools, Nicole rivers from Cumberland County Schools and jennifer brian from Brunswick County Schools. Thank you all so much for joining us here today. Thank you. Thanks for having us. And I also want to say congratulations for being your regional teachers of the year because that is awesome. So thank you so much. Um, we are now, you know, in our second week or for some of you maybe even a little bit more into the school year and I'm just curious to hear from each of you. How is this year similar to and different from what you expected in Brunswick County? We welcome students on august 23rd, 100% face to face with mask and uh, so I'm grateful just to see um, our hallways full again. Um, our students in classrooms engaged. We are continuing to offer 1 to 1 in terms of our chromebook technology, um, to be prepared uh, for kind of worst case scenario situations. Um, but students continue to be, uh, really well, I guess adapted to continue to doing digital learning. Um, but I can tell they are so grateful as our teachers to be back in the classroom. Um getting that face to face interaction with one another. So thus far we've had a really strong start here in Brunswick County, specifically at South Brunswick High School. Um, and I'm hopeful that we will stay healthy here. Um, that folks in our community will continue to take the right precautions that they need to, for us to all stay safe and and to stay so we can stay in the schools to do the jobs that we know we need to do for our students and Nicole. You're also coming to us from high school. Um, what is your, you're looking like It is looking like a true hybrid kind of thing. Okay, so the transition is, is great. We came back 100% as well mask and between my classes and even during my class there's a lot of okay, get your hands sandy. Okay. So he's now clean up. Okay. We can't pass items and cleaning tables and things of that nature. Um, going in one direction in the buildings in certain areas to make sure kids are just saying as safe as possible. So it gives us a sense of security that we're doing all we can. Um what's different is that students are now eating it in our classroom with us so that, you know, we usually set them all to the cafeterias. I'm having an elementary school, I think experience or something, something, you know, just like okay guys, we're eating together. Yeah. Right. Um, but I enjoy the kids so so much. Um, there's a challenge of what do I keep from the old before, you know, Covid came and what do I use from the new? Making sure that I keep those SCL assignments, you know those social emotional learning assignments and those connections going. The kids have not been in school together all at the same time for a while and some kids are new. So even though they joined us last year online, They didn't stuck up put into our building until August 23 and they have to make friends now. So making sure kids are collaborating safely is definitely one of my number one priorities in my classroom. Um, so you know, with all the precautions going on, we are still making sure that the kids feel connected and and feel at home in our classrooms and in our build, you mentioned elementary school in Susanna, that's where you're coming to us from. So how is your school year, what you expected or what's different? Well, I was just sharing with a colleague how grateful I am to feel like we had a fairly, what was ostensibly normal start and that ironically the thing, um, with which most people are the most acclimated to which most people are most acclimated as mask wearing. So the thing that seems the most obviously foreign is actually the thing that is shockingly comfortable, it's all the other stuff, you know, we don't focus on learning loss at our school or in our district, we're not using that terminology, we think it's smarter and safer to focus on the assets we still possess and all that we gained while learning virtually, especially for the smaller Children for whom I think a lot of attention has been put on them as far as what they haven't been able to do so because we're not focused on that, we're focused on um you know, re teaching how to be a person in a shared space and it's already difficult, I think for k through five students to truly understand how to share a space safely. Um so add on top of it, the fact that the, you know, are my third graders have basically not been in school since first grade, so it's, it's um it's that reoccupation to a shared learning environment and so far it has been nothing but joyful. Um they are so excited to be together, we are also excited to be sharing things. Um it feels like putting on a familiar costume, but almost with uh an intangible energy because we haven't been able to do this and so long um we have as a district taken on in national city schools a lot of new curriculum district wide, so there's actually been a really great spirit of camaraderie and collaboration because we're all not just starting back in person again, but also starting these new initiatives, so there's also been this kind of spirit of collaboration amongst teachers, which has been, I'm welcome. So I am thrilled. We're just finished day seven, we've done our self portraits, we've read some books already, we're jumping into three digit addition, so I feel like I'm in my element Yeah, when you're with your students and thinking about students and families in particular, um are there additional supports or different needs than you've had in previous years? Certainly, I think that as a district we did a really pretty amazing jobs throughout the pandemic of creating a lot of community partnerships and those still exist. So there's still a lot of communication between um those community stakeholders that are caring for Children outside of school and and ensuring you know, that there is, they're sort of similar precautions happening in, in all environments, but there's also this lingering, the lingering benefit of just family relationships, I feel like as a district, we really prioritized that partnership with families, particularly during remote learning and that has just carried over. Um, I've always felt historically that there is um that some teachers possess or feel a discomfort of bonding with or partnering with families and I think one silver lining of this experience is that that has been um dispelled a bit that there is an embracing of those relationships um but as far as, you know, we we do not have a sense of hybrid here, there is very much a sense of fully masked 100% in person learning. We haven't even introduced our technology yet for the year, which has felt very refreshing. Um we're going to be doing unfortunately in third grade, you know, there's some pressure, some testing pressure coming up, so we're going to have to be doing that soon, but you know, I think it's really just focusing on that community building peace, focusing on that relationship, building peace. Um and that react claymation piece and using the assets that we developed last year through these relationships um to help kind of support us as we begin. I definitely want to echo what Susannah said and in terms of parent communication last year, I by far and away um experienced the most parent contact and had the most parent contact last year out of my 12 years of teaching and it was wonderful in most cases and and again, so I plan to continue building those positive relationships with the families of my students And building positive relationships with my students themselves, um understanding, you know, there's more to them than just what I see in the 90 minutes that I have them each day. Um so really that you know, it's going to continue to be a big focus for me at the high school level, we have to focus on how we communicate information, not just with our families but with our students. You know, our students are at the age where um they are taking responsibility for getting information about school, about school policies and procedures. Um, and especially because we are still in a state of of um fluctuation with potential quarantines and exposures and students um advocating for themselves when they do have to be out of school, whether it's due to a quarantine or exposure students advocating for themselves and and knowing how to still access their schoolwork and to stay um stay engaged with their teachers when they have to be absent. One other thing I'll say is I'm very grateful that for the first time um in the least in a long, long time we have a school nurse on our staff five days a week. Um and I am grateful for the support that she will be able to provide for our students and families. And um, I believe that's across our district, that we are now fully staffed with nurses on our campuses five days a week and that is a huge and tremendous. Um, I don't think that's the case still yet in all districts across the state, but I certainly hope that that funding um is prioritized and that we're able to continue to support and provide individuals like nurses and social workers and behavioral specialists to help support us in our families. <p>Hi, everyone. Meteorologist Anthony Baglione here on this Friday where we're still looking at some relatively warm temperatures into this afternoon. 83 is where we should hit for a high temperature. Nice and quiet for us until we get later on into late this afternoon into this evening where we're gonna watch the potential for some showers and storms coming through. Not a ton of activity for us as we head later on into tonight. There's a look at rain chances though. They go up to about 50% as we head into that evening time frame. So if you have any plans tonight, if you want to go out and get a Friday evening dinner or something like that, it might be a good idea to a, get the indoor table and then b bring along the reindeer just in case tonight. Here's a look at Future cast. So we time this out looking pretty quiet here the next couple of hours that band back to our west, it should start to weaken as it gets closer to us. It may try and restrengthen them as we get into. Like there's four o'clock you can see on Futurecast 56 o'clock or so, some of those storms could be on the stronger side and then it pushes out of here as we get later on into tonight and then we see maybe a stray shower potential still outline for tomorrow morning. Here's a look at our severe potential today. Level one out of five for most of the viewing area. What this is saying is there could be some isolated pockets where we get some stronger storms. It looks like the best chances for that would be west of us. But gusty winds would be our primary threat as we get into this evening. 78 is where we go for our Saturday. A huge temperature swing there into Sunday at 59 scattered showers are gonna be likely though, especially Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening, they do start to taper off though late Sunday night. So for the Tar Heel 10 miler, that's tomorrow morning, we are proud partners of that. We're going to see temperatures in the sixties for the majority of the forecast there. A stray showers possible, but most of the morning is looking just fine for that event. Tomorrow. We head over the next seven. We go from 83 today all the way down to 59 on Sunday. A rebound of 66 on Monday and then a nice week next week attempts in the seventies, even a few upper sixties there Thursday looking pretty quiet after we get some rainfall there to close out our weekend.</p>
