TARBORO, N.C. — An Edgecombe County deputy shot and killed a man brandishing a knife Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The deputy, whose name wasn't released, was responding to a domestic disturbance at a home near U.S. Highway 64 Bypass and N.C. Highway 33 outside of Tarboro at about 12:20 p.m. when the incident occurred, authorities said. The deputy was getting out of his patrol car when an unidentified man armed with a knife quickly approached him, authorities said.

The deputy shot the man and killed him.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to review the shooting, which is standard protocol with an officer-involved shooting in North Carolina. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
