RALEIGH, N.C. — The volunteers and friends of Shelley Lake Park who run the park's Facebook page are raising money to thank the organization that rescued an eagle that fell from a nest over the weekend.

According to the volunteers, the nest collapsed, dumping an eaglet to the ground. The eaglet, a female, was not seriously injured, but she could not get up and fly after the fall. They estimated the eagle spent about seven hours on the ground before rescuers found her.

On Facebook, they shared a photo taken by Barry Wheeler of the American Wildlife Refuge, of the eagle and asked for donations for Wheeler's pet cause.

American Wildlife Refuge and Shelley Lake both set a goal of returning the eagle to a rebuilt nest.
