Durham woman surrenders to police after hit-and-run crash that seriously injured pregnant teen

A Durham woman has surrendered to police after being charged in connection to a hit-and-run that seriously injured a pregnant 18-year-old on Jan. 9.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman has surrendered to police after being charged in connection to a hit-and-run that seriously injured a pregnant 18-year-old on Jan. 9.

Heven Zariah Rooks was traveling north on South Briggs Avenue when she was struck head-on by a Cadillac Escalade that was traveling south. Police said the driver of the Escalade fled the scene of the crash and in the process, struck and broke two power poles on South Driver street.

Arrest warrants say the driver was going 62 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Durham police have taken out warrants against Devon Jarandz Edwards, 26, and Teresa Christy Hooker, 33, in connection to the crash. Hooker turned herself into police on Thursday night and is facing charges of felony accessory after the fact and filing a false police report.

Edwards is wanted on charges of felony hit-and-run resulting in serious injury, reckless driving to endanger, speeding, driving with a revoked license, failure to register motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed and hit-and-run involving property damage. Police have not yet been able to find Edwards.

Police ask that anyone with information on where Edwards is call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

Heven Rooks was 8 months pregnant when she was hit by the driver of a 2002 Cadillac Escalade while she was driving south on the 200 block of South Briggs Avenue in Durham.

Rooks was eight months pregnant when she was transported to Duke Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Her father told WRAL News she and her baby were released from the hospital on Jan. 14 and were recovering at home.
