DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A 16-year-old Riverside High School student was critically injured in a parking lot outside the school Wednesday evening, Durham police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, several students were leaving school around 7 p.m. when the teen fell off the trunk of a car and hit his head.

He was taken to Duke University Hospital for treatment. His medical condition was unclear, as police did not release his name Wednesday night.

Investigators said another student was in his car when the victim got on the car’s trunk. They did not say whether the car was moving at the time he fell.

Charges haven’t been filed and the case is still under investigation, a police spokeswoman said.
