DURHAM, N.C. — A 16-year-old student at Riverside High School in Durham was arrested Wednesday after he brought a loaded gun onto campus, authorities said.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office said a school resource officer received an anonymous tip that a student had a handgun. Deputies said they found the student in class and took the weapon – a .45-caliber pistol – without incident.

Steven Michael Carrera, of the 1300 block of Morreene Road, was charged with possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a handgun by a minor and felony possession of a weapon on educational property.

Deputies said Carrera refused to answer questions and would not say why he had the weapon or where it came from.

He was held in jail under a $100,000 bond.
