Durham student charged after bringing gun to school
A 16-year-old student at Riverside High School in Durham was arrested Wednesday after he brought a loaded gun onto campus, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedThe Durham County Sheriff’s Office said a school resource officer received an anonymous tip that a student had a handgun. Deputies said they found the student in class and took the weapon – a .45-caliber pistol – without incident.
Steven Michael Carrera, of the 1300 block of Morreene Road, was charged with possession of a concealed weapon, possession of a handgun by a minor and felony possession of a weapon on educational property.
Deputies said Carrera refused to answer questions and would not say why he had the weapon or where it came from.
