DURHAM, N.C. — A water main break was creating a big mess north of downtown Durham early Wednesday morning.

The break was reported along North Duke Street at Trinity Avenue, in front of Durham School of the Arts, before 5:45 a.m. The school announced students will learn remotely on Wednesday due to the break.

At 6:30 a.m., water was still gushing onto the sidewalk and flooding the roadway in front of the school. Only one lane of North Duke Street was open to traffic.

The water was turned off by 7 a.m., and crews were making repairs.

The official cause of the break was not provided, although a change in temperatures may be a factor. The timeline for repairs was unknown.

WRAL's Brian Shrader recommends using Roxboro Street as an alternate route if the issue continues for the morning commute.
