DURHAM, N.C. — Durham is getting its first official beer mile race this spring.
The Glass Jug Beer Lab and Bull City Running Company are teaming up for the Bull City Beer Mile race on Saturday, April 23, at Durham Central Park.

The beer mile consists of drinking a 12-ounce beer then taking a quarter-mile lap around the park. The drinking and running are done four times to complete a total 1-mile distance.

Groups of runners will take off every 20 to 30 minutes throughout the afternoon. And you don't have to compete alone, you can sign up as part of a two or four person relay team.

“Beer miles have been happening across Durham for years,” Glass Jug co-owner Chris Creech said. “When we realized that the sidewalk looping through the park by our taproom is exactly a quarter-mile, we knew that there was an opportunity here to do something unique.”

The Glass Jug will be providing the beer for the race and organizing an accompanying festival in the park. The festival will include food trucks and music.

Bull City Running Co. will handle race logistics and provide chip timing services for runners.

“We want everyone to feel welcome to join us,” Creech added. “Whether you’re competing in the race or just spectating, we’re creating an exciting atmosphere that will be fun for people of all ages.”

If you'd rather not drink beer, you can opt to do a non-alcoholic beer mile with Athletic Brewing Company's non-alcoholic golden ale.

All race participants will receive a commemorative Bull City Beer Mile beer glass.
