Durham Rescue Mission equips thousands for start of school

Thousands of local students are preparing to return to class on Monday, but not all of them have the means to stock up on supplies.

DURHAM, N.C. — At its annual Back to School Drive, the Durham Rescue Mission delivered almost 4,000 backpacks full of supplies to needy children.

Volunteers worked through the night to prepare for the event, and families lined up before dawn to benefit.

Volunteers at the Durham Rescue Mission gave away more than 3,600 backpacks with school supplies and 12,000 pieces of clothing on Friday, Aug. 21, 2014, at the 15th annual back-to-school party.

The rescue mission served breakfast and lunch, and sent families home with bags of groceries as well.

Students could select from donations of clothing, sports equipment like basketballs and soccer balls to go along with their school supplies.

They snacked on snow cones and enjoyed a morning of fun and fellowship.
