DURHAM, N.C. — With the help of 150 incredible volunteers, the Durham Rescue Mission delivered 1,307 Thanksgiving meals to families in need on Thursday.

Each meal included roasted turkey, dressing, gravy, green beans, corn and deserts along with a $20 voucher card to the Durham Rescue Mission's thrift store.

Usually, the Durham Rescue Mission holds a large community dinner to serve everyone, but during the coronavirus pandemic, the mission depended on volunteer drivers from Elevation Church, C3 Ministries, Meals on Wheels and other groups to deliver the food to home-bound senior citizens and families in need.

“I am so thankful to see how our community comes together each year to provide this hot meal for those who are less fortunate," said Dr. Ernie Mills, CEO. "From volunteers who cooked, packaged, and delivered, it is a team effort. COVID has brought about a lot of changes to meet the needs of the ‘have not’s.’ Times are tough, but we still have much to be thankful for!”

The volunteers were up before sunrise on Thursday cooking turkeys and packing meals.
