DURHAM, N.C. — The superintendent of Durham Public Schools issued a statement Friday mourning the loss of a long-time employee and a woman he considered a friend.

"Sylvia Rogers served three DPS superintendents and tens of thousands of students with tenacity, enthusiasm, and humor," Pascal Mubenga said.

"She was an outspoken advocate for Durham’s children, never afraid to share her truth with me, always determined that our schools would stand tall and proud on behalf of our entire community—leaving no one behind. She leaves a legacy that is very Durham: a fiery spirit that would accept nothing less than the best for those we serve. I will miss my friend.

A source within the school system said Rogers' death was not caused by COVID-19.
