DURHAM, N.C. — Two police officers on Thursday shot a man near the Duke Manor Apartments in Durham after tracking him down from a hit-and-run outside a Front Street hotel.

Around 3 a.m., officers were conducting patrols at a hotel on Front Street when they noticed a man sleeping in a vehicle. When officers woke him up, he started the car and put it in reverse, in an attempt to flee the scene.

On Friday, the suspect was identified as Ahmmon Fishe.

While fleeing, Fishe hit an unoccupied Durham police car as well as another car, police said.

Around 4:45 a.m., officers located the car -- which had been stolen out of Greensboro -- in the parking lot of 311 South LaSalle Street.

The driver woke up when officers approached his car. Fishe started the car, backed it into an unoccupied police car and attempted to drive the car over a curb. Several officers fled to avoid being hit.

Two officers observed that another officer was in "imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death," according to the Durham Police Department, and they shot the suspect in the left shoulder and left arm.

After the car stopped, Fishe attempted to flee. Officers were able to catch him and take him into custody.

Fishe, 21, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of stolen motor vehicle, and resist delay or obstruct. More charges are possible.

Officer R.V. Gamboa and Officer B.N. Vasquez were the officers involved.

The damaged police car was located next to the stolen SUV that could be seen on top of the curb, in the bushes.

Fishe was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative duty.

The incident is being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and the DPD Professional Standards Division. This remains an active investigation.

Fishe is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

Those living in the community can expect traffic and bus delays during the morning commute.
