Durham police searching for driver after SUV strikes 39-year-old woman

DURHAM, N.C. — A woman was killed Sunday in a hit-and-run.

Around 10 p.m., officers with the Durham Police Department responded to a crash involving a pedestrian near 109 N.C. Highway 54 West in front of the Circle K gas station.

According to officials, 39-year-old Christina Marie Hayes was trying to cross the street when she was struck by an unknown SUV that fled the scene.

Hayes was transported to a local hospital, where she died as a result of her injuries.

Statements collected from witnesses and parts recovered from the scene lead officials to believe that the suspect SUV is a 2017 or newer red Honda CRV.

The front grill of the SUV will be significantly damaged, police said. Parts No. 4,5, 9 and 13 in the diagram below were recovered from the scene and should be missing from the SUV.

Police said speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be related to the crash.
