DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating after the driver of an SUV crashed and was killed Tuesday morning.

Officials said the crash happened on Cole Mill Road shortly after 10 a.m. They said the driver, John Robert Mitchell, 51, of Durham, lost control of his vehicle, ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Mitchell was transported to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

A passenger was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening as of Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators said they were working to determine what caused the driver to leave the road. The name of the passenger was not being released as of Tuesday afternoon because next of kin had not been notified.
