DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police are investigating after they said a stolen moped collided with one of their patrol cars late Friday morning.

The incident happened on Lakeland Street. Officials said the patrol car, a 2018 Dodge Charger, was stopped facing north on Lakeland Street when it was struck in the left front corner by a 2020 Genuine Buddy moped driven by Steven Kersey, 25, of Durham.

Kersey was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He's charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and misdemeanor fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle.

Officers said they were looking for Kersey in relation to a larceny at a Family Dollar on Thursday. Earlier Friday, officers said they responded to a call about a disturbance with a suspect matching the description of the larceny suspect.

Officers located Kersey but he refused to stop for police. Around 11 a.m., police said they spotted the moped, which was unoccupied, parked on Lakeland Avenue. As an officer pulled up to the moped, Kersey jumped on the moped. The police car that Kersey hit pulled up in front of the moped and Kersey hit it. The car sustained minor damage.

The moped was reported stolen by the Duke University Police Department on August 20.
