Man charged in fatal Durham shooting

A Durham man has been charged in a Thursday morning fatal shooting, police said Friday.

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man has been charged in a Thursday morning fatal shooting, police said Friday.

Officers were flagged down on Holloway Street shortly after 8:30 a.m. and told that a man had been shot. Officers found Benjamin Keith Smith, 51, in a parking lot near the intersection of Holloway and Raynor streets.

Smith was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Witnesses said Smith and another man had been arguing before the shooting.

Officers were able to apprehend Taki D. Farley, 22, after a brief chase. He had a handgun on him at the time, police said.

Farley was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as larceny of motor vehicle and possession of a stolen motor vehicle in connection with an unrelated car theft from Chautauqua Street earlier that morning.

He remains in the Durham County jail without bond.
