DURHAM, N.C. — Police are investigating a murder after a man was shot and killed at a Durham apartment complex early Wednesday morning, officials said.

The Durham Police Department was dispatched around 2 a.m. to the 500 block of Hardee Street. When officer arrived, they found a man who was dead. The man was identified as 23-year-old Symoud Syheed Lewis.

People living in the complex said Lewis entered into one of the buildings after being shot and went door to door for help.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said she opened the door to find Lewis bleeding.

"He was just a human being and he was reaching out for help and he was dying," she said. "Nobody deserves to die alone and in pain like that. I just wanted to hold him and let him know he was not dying alone."

No charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call Investigator J. Barr at 919-560-4440 ext. 29325 or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.
