DURHAM, N.C. — A woman told Durham police that a man came to her apartment Thursday around 10 a.m. claiming he needed to make a repair. After she let him in, the man pulled a handgun.

The woman was able to get away unharmed, and Durham police are looking for information to help them identify the man.

The woman said she believes the man was attempting to sexually assault her.

According to the woman's report, he was black and slightly heavyset, with a light beard, thin mustache and short hair. He was between 35 and 40 years old, wearing a dark blue T-shirt with lettering, black knee-length shorts and black sneakers.

Neighbors said the incident is unnerving.

"I don't open my door after a certain time, and if it's not someone I know," neighbor Kyana Green said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Durham police at 919-560-4440, extension 29238, or Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200.

  • Durham police shared these safety tips to reduce the risk of becoming a crime victim:
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Call 911 immediately if you see any suspicious activity or people.
  • At home, the front and rear door areas should be well-lit and locked at all times.
  • Do not open your door to strangers. If someone comes to your door and asks to use your phone to call for help, offer instead to make the call.
  • Carry a personal alarm with you to alert neighbors and to deter potential attackers.
  • Have your keys ready when approaching your apartment or vehicle.
