DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham Police Department employee is in custody on Thursday on charges of first-degree murder.

Marcus Woods was arrested in connection with the death of 25-year-old Tyler Young, but that action came after authorities wrongfully arrested another man.

On Nov. 21, around 11:45 p.m., officers responded to a home in the 300 block of Gary Street, where they found a man who had been shot.

Police say Young was the man shot and killed at the home on Gary Street.

Tyler Young was murdered in November on Gary Street in Durham.

At first police charged another man, Kenneth Dewayne Cates, in Young's murder. However, Cates' charges have since been dropped and Woods was charged.

A police spokesperson said as the investigation continued, officers learned they had charged the wrong person and released Cates within 24 hours of his arrest.

Police say Woods and Young knew each other, but have not revealed a motive in the case. Woods is a procurement technician who assists with office supplies, a civilian role.
