Durham police arrest three after man barricades himself in apartment

Durham police took three people into custody early Wednesday following a six-hour standoff that forced an evacuation of several units at the Country Scene Apartments off East Cornwalis Road.

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police took three people into custody early Wednesday following a six-hour standoff that forced an evacuation of several units at the Country Scene Apartments off East Cornwalis Road. 

Authorities said that a resident called 911 around midnight about a fight and screaming in an apartment. When officers arrived, a man came barricaded himself in the apartment and did not respond to numerous attempts to contact him. 

Hostage negotiators and Durham's selective enforcement team were called to the scene, but there was on response from the man.

Just before 6 a.m., officers fired tear gas into the unit, and three people surrendered. Officers were unable to locate a woman when they entered the apartment, but no injuries were reported. 

Durham police said that the investigation into what caused the incident is ongoing and charges are pending.
