DURHAM, N.C. — Durham city leaders approved a final budget Monday night that included a 4-cent increase in the tax rate.

City Council members approved the budget by a 4-3 vote.

The budget sets the tax rate at 54 cents per $100 of assessed value. The old tax rate of 61.8 cents per $100 was rolled back this year to 50 cents following a local property revaluation.

The tax increase would provide raises to firefighters, police officers and some other city employees, as well as fund weekly collection of yard waste and pay for bonds sold for infrastructure improvements.
