DURHAM, N.C. — Two men were arrested last week in connection with a string of armed robberies at Durham business, according to police.

Durham police said officers arrived at a Subway restaurant at 2405 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd. just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday and were told by employees that two men with hoods covering their faces jumped over the counter and demanded money.

The men forced a female employee to the floor and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing, police said.

Several minutes later, police said officers responded to a report of a suspicious person with a weapon near the intersection of House Avenue and Chapel Hill Road and arrested Frankie George Grimes, 23, and Marquize Jerell Knight, 22, both of Durham.

A gun and cash were recovered during the arrest, police said.

Authorities said Grimes and Knight were also involved in four other armed robberies, including:

  • ·      On Feb. 10, two men wearing ski masks entered a Speedway gas station at 803 East Gear St. at about 11:30 p.m. and robbed the business at gunpoint.
  • ·      On Feb. 11, two men entered a Kroger at 1802 North Pointe Drive just after 5 a.m., pointed guns at two people inside the store and took cash.
  • ·      On March 11, two men entered the University Market at 1108 West Chapel Hill St. at about 10:20 p.m. and kicked an employee in the head during an armed robbery.
  • ·      On March 19, three men wearing masks entered a Family Dollar at 2904 Guess Rd. at about 10 p.m. and robbed the business and a customer inside the store at gunpoint.

Knight and Grimes were both charged with five counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon, five counts of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle.

Knight is also facing charges of larceny of a motor vehicle and an additional count of possession of a stolen vehicle in connection with the theft of a car on Stone Village Court on March 11, as well as two probation violations.

Grimes is being held at the Durham County Jail under $1,030,000 bond while Knight is being held under a $1,060,000 bond.
