DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man is facing charges after the car he was driving collided Monday morning with a moped during the rush hour commute, police said.

The crash occurred around 7:45 a.m. on North Guthrie Avenue near Juniper Street in Durham.

Harold Taylor, 59, of Durham, was on a 2016 Tao Tao moped when his vehicle collided with a 2018 Nissan Altima that was driven by Khedron Mims, 41, of Durham, police said in a written statement.

Mims has been charged with failure to yield right of way and misdemeanor death by vehicle, the police statement said.

According to police, Mims was eastbound on Juniper Street when he stopped at a stop sign at North Guthrie Street. His vehicle drove forward but stopped in the intersection before it struck Taylor's moped, which had the right of way, police said.

The moped collided with the car's left front end, police said.

Taylor died at the scene, according to police.
