DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man died Friday morning after a crash on Interstate 40 near the Streets at Southpoint mall, police said.

The crash happened on westbound I-40 near the N.C. Highway 751 exit at about 6:10 a.m. Police said a 2010 Nissan Altima driven by Antonio Waddell, 24, crashed into the back of a 2004 Ford F150 pickup driven by Paul Thorne, 40, of Clayton, in the center lane of the highway.

Waddell, who was thrown from his car, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died a short time later, police said. Thorne was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, but police said said speed appears to have been a factor.

Several lanes of I-40 West were closed for about three hours after the crash.

A minor crash nearby also contributed to delays, police said.
