DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man charged in a deadly double shooting at North Carolina Central University in September 2021 was found not guilty by a jury.

Two years after the crime, Dezmond Harper was found not guilty on two counts of first-degree murder after the defense presented a self-defense argument.

"While it is not the outcome the DA’s Office sought, we respect the jury’s verdict and thank them for their service," said a spokesperson from the Durham County District Attorney's Office.

Two people, Shamori Brown and Tavis Rhodes, died in the shooting on the NCCU campus on Sept. 18, 2021.

Harper is also charged with murder in Wake County for his role in that shooting.

Brown was 21 years old and Rhodes was 20. Both graduated from Hillside High School.

Campus police sent an alert to the NC Central community after a report of shots fired at a parking lot adjacent to Latham Parking Deck on East Lawson Street. The men were injured and later died in the hospital.

The shooting did not involve NCCU students.

More than 5,600 attendees at the NCCU football game were placed on lockdown in the nearby O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium when the shooting happened. Surrounding roads were closed to traffic, as police actively searched for the shooter or shooters.

"Thanks to the well-trained, quick acting NCCU Police Department, no members of the NCCU community or its guests were impacted by this tragedy," university officials said in a statement.
