GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro police have a Durham man in custody following a high-speed chase that ended with the suspect being shot and the police officer injured.

The officer and suspect, Anthony Fields, 21, of Durham, were taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The officer's name has not been released.

Police said the chase started when Fields fled an early-Sunday-morning traffic stop near the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and ended when his car crashed into a traffic sign and then struck the officer's vehicle.

An officer then shot Fields, who left the scene, police said.

The Greensboro Police Department's internal affairs unit and criminal investigation division are investigating.
