RIEGELWOOD, N.C. — A body found Saturday in the Cape Fear River near the Bladen-Columbus county line has been identified as a Durham man, authorities said Monday.

Dive teams began searching the river near N.C. Highway 11 on Friday, after the Bladen County Sheriff's Office received a tip that someone had been assaulted and a body had been dumped in the Cape fear River.

The crews found a man's body Saturday morning near the Riegelwood Golf Course and sent the body to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh to determine his identity and a cause of death.

The autopsy confirmed the body as that of 54-year-old Kenneth Ross Covell. Although a cause of death hasn't been determined, authorities are investigating his death as a homicide.

"Based on the information received and the circumstances surrounding this case, it is believed that foul play is involved with the death of Covell," the Bladen County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 910-862-6960.
