Durham man dies after stabbing

Officers responded to the Hampton Forest Apartments, at 901 Chalk Level Road, at about 1 a.m. in response to a reported stabbing. They found a man inside an apartment who had been stabbed and was unconscious.

DURHAM, N.C. — Police were investigating a Monday morning stabbing that left one man dead.

Officers responded to the Hampton Forest Apartments, at 901 Chalk Level Road, at about 1 a.m. in response to a reported stabbing. They found a man inside an apartment who had been stabbed and was unconscious.

The man, was police identified as Jay Lerma, 31, was taken to Duke University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

According to preliminary reports, the man was stabbed during an argument near a breezeway at the apartment complex. Investigators were trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the argument and stabbing.
