DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man has been charged with committing or attempting four armed robberies within a 48-hour period, police said.

Akeem Supreme Mack, 19, was arrested Thursday afternoon on South LaSalle Street, moments after an attempted armed robbery was reported at an apartment complex at 311 S. LaSalle St., police said.

A man was opening the trunk of his vehicle when a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt put a gun to his head and demanded his money and keys, police said. The victim didn't speak English, so he didn't respond immediately, and the gunman pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed, police said.

The gunman tried to get in the victim’s vehicle, but the doors were locked. He then ran toward an apartment complex across the street, where investigators from the Durham Police Department’s Gang Unit arrested him.

Investigators recovered a gun that had been reported stolen in York County, Pa., police said.

Mack was charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a stolen firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He also was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in each of the following cases:

  • A carjacking in the 600 block of Fernway Avenue shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. A man was unloading his groceries from his car when he was carjacked. The robber also took the man’s wallet and car.
  • A robbery in the 300 block of Foushee Street at 11 p.m. Tuesday. A woman was walking back to her car after using the ATM when an armed man approached her and demanded money. He took $40 from her and left in a car matching the description of the one stolen on Fernway Avenue.
  • A carjacking in the parking deck at The Residence Inn Durham, at 1108 W. Main St. at 3 p.m. Wednesday. A woman told officers a man approached her, displayed a silver handgun and demanded the keys to her vehicle. He fled in her car.

Both stolen cars have been located, police said.
