DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man was arrested on robbery and kidnapping charges Tuesday after a brief chase, police said.

The chase started shortly after 10 a.m. when Officer M.J. Hamilton spotted a stolen 2006 silver Saturn Ion. Hamilton said he attempted to stop the car near Dillard and Liberty streets, but the driver refused to pull over.

Officers chased the Saturn for approximately three blocks before it went over a curb on Cleveland Street and the driver jumped out of the vehicle. Officers ran after the driver, identified later as Ivory Lotson, 19, of North Mangum Street, for about a block before arresting him.

The owner of the stolen car told officers he got out of the vehicle around 11 p.m. Monday to put some garbage in a trash can in the 200 block of West Morgan Street. He said a man armed with a gun approached him and demanded his wallet. The man took the victim’s wallet and then forced him into the trunk of the Saturn, police said.

The victim said he managed to open the trunk and jump out of the car on the Durham Freeway. He was being treated Tuesday at Duke University Hospital for injuries.

Lotson has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony conspiracy, forgery, resisting, delaying and obstructing an officer, felony speeding to elude a law enforcement officer, careless and reckless driving and hit-and-run.
