DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County Library will begin to offer pickup services starting next week, joining library systems in Wake County and Chapel Hill.
Starting June 16, Durham library patrons will be able to log in to their account online or call 919-560-0103 to place a hold on books and audiovisual material for pick up at the library, according to the announcement. The phone line is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, starting Tuesday, June 16. More information is on the Durham library's TakeOut website.

Here's how it will work, according to the announcement:

  • Once customers’ items are ready, they will be asked to set up a pick up time through the online reservation system or by calling 919-560-0103.
  • Five items can be reserved per library card for each pick up.
  • During customers’ 15 minute reservation time, their items will be in the library lobby.
  • If a customer misses their reservation time, they will have 24 hours to reschedule.
  • Customers will be asked to show their library card information or ID.

As part of new safety measures, customers will be required to wear a cloth face covering in the lobby and wait their turn outside the library at least six feet apart. Only one customer will be allowed in the lobby at a time, according to the announcement.

Library Take-Out, as Durham is calling it, will be available at North, East, South, and Southwest Regional Libraries, as well as Stanford L. Warren Branch Library from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Service will be available at Bragtown Branch Library from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Hours could change as the system develops, according to the announcement.

During the hours when Library Take-Out is available, drop boxes will be open outside the libraries for customers to return checked-out items. Durham library also began automated book return on June 1 at the Main Library. The book return, according to Durham's announcement, will continue to be open at Main Library for customers to return books and audiovisual material from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Both Wake County and Chapel Hill libraries also will start offering pickup services next week. Local library systems also offer lots of virtual books, activities and materials as well.
