DURHAM, N.C. — A cat died and a Durham home was seriously damaged in a fire Tuesday night, fire officials said.

The Durham Fire Department was dispatched to 228 Monmouth Ave., a two-story residential structure, at 11:17 p.m.

Heavy fire was in the front of the building, and the 26 firefighters who responded were able to control the flames in about 10 minutes.

One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation but not hospitalized.

Two dogs and a cat were rescued by the home’s occupants, but a cat was found dead.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
