DURHAM, N.C. — Two men in Durham were killed two days apart, police say, by the same person.

41-year-old Darrell Hart faces murder charges in both cases from early February.

Those crimes happened only a mile and a half from each other. Hart has an extensive criminal history in Durham. He's only been out of jail since last September.

41-year-old Darrell Hart faces murder charges in both cases from early February.

He's now charged with two murders in two days and was arrested more than 100 miles away.

Durham Police cars lined the road on Denfield Street the morning of Feb. 8. They were responding to the shooting of Laron Dante Allen, who died.
Less than two miles away, in the afternoon on Feb. 10, Gregory Wayne Headen was shot. He made it to the Tobacco and Vape Shop on Guess Road, searching for help.

"I was just working, and there's this guy that's been saying that he got shot," said the caller. "He's been in here laying down on the floor, and like, I see blood."

The 911 operator tried to talk that caller through CPR for Headen, but he also died.

"If you can lock your doors, that would be great so we can go ahead and give him some care that we need to do, and if you have somebody there to help you, that would be great," the operator said.

Police said Hart committed both of the murders in broad daylight. He also led Charlotte police on a chase before his arrest on Feb. 29.

Hart has been in and out of prison for the past 20 years. He has past convictions for drug charges, larceny, breaking and entering, robbery with a dangerous weapon and second-degree kidnapping.

WRAL News has asked Durham police if these two murders are connected, other than the same suspect, but we have not gotten a response.

Hart's next court date is March 25.
